Banjo Kamiludeen, National Coach, Nigerian Deaf Football Association, says Nigeria will feature in the forthcoming West African deaf football tournament in Bamako, Mali, from May 6 to May 17.
Kamiludeen told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos that the team was battle-ready for the football fiesta organised by the West African Deaf Football Union (WADFU).
“We are going to take part in this year’s edition and I am very happy about it because we missed last year’s edition as a result of scarcity of fund and sponsor.
“We have confirmed our participation to the organisers and the players are working hard in camp to excel in the group matches and final stages of the competition,” he said.
He disclosed that its participation in the competition was made possible through the sponsorship of Emmanuel Ibru, a grand patron of the association, and described the funding as a “prayer answered”.
While applauding Ibru for the remarkable support, he promised that his team would re-assert itself as a force to be reckoned with in the football fiesta which would feature eight countries.
“The national team has been prominent in this competition since its inception in 2010 but lack of funds denied us participation last year.
“I really appreciate the tremendous support of our patron, Ibru, who has come to our rescue this time in spite of the situation of the country and the ongoing recession,” Kamiludeen said.
The coach noted that Nigeria was the leading country in Africa having won the trophy three times in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions hosted by Nigeria and Republic of Benin.
He added that the national team was known for its competence and determination which singled it out as the only team that had made it five times to the finals.
However, it was second in the 4th and 5th editions, held in 2014 and 2015 by Togo but was absent in the 6th edition hosted by Ghana in 2016.
